Warner Bros set to revive…The Banana Splits?!

Posted by Eoin Mason On August - 17 - 2008

Yes, that’s right, World. Be prepared for the return of one of Hanna Barbera’s less known creations, The Banana Splits.

Variety reports that in September, Warner Bros will be helping to start a multi platform effort to bring back the world’s weirdest rock group starting with music videos and shorts being shown on Cartoon Network before moving on to DVDs, CDs and clothing.

The last time we saw the Banana Splits in Pop Culture was way back in 1968 in ‘The Banana Splits and Friends’ which only lasted until 1970 but showcased some of Hanna Barbera’s other and less successful shows including Danger Island (one of a tiny amount of Live Action HB shows) and Arabian Knights (Fun Fact: This was one of the shows tied in to a hour long Space Ghost episode in which SG is transported to other time periods).

Bingo, Drooper, Fleegle and Snork are set to be aimed to the 4-7 year old demographic and are even set to take over the Hard Rock Park in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where it’ll be called ‘Banana Splitsville’.

Out of all the revivals that we have seen whether music, television or film wise, this is the riskiest. This is a product that was only on the air for 2 years (4 if you count their mini comeback when Cartoon Network was first on the air) and might not have the legs of Scooby Doo and other shows produced by HB.

On the other hand…well, look at them. How could kids not love guys in animal costumes playing music? And if they’re revived in the right way, I reckon they’ll fall in love with them in a way they had probably never seen before.

So for now, I’ll be taking the ‘Wait and See’ approach. But for those who aren’t familiar, this is what’s in store.
