‘Mr Rhythm and Blues’ Jerry Wexler dies at 91

Posted by Eoin Mason On August - 15 - 2008
The record producer who helped jump start the careers of Aretha Franklyn and Led Zepplin has passed away at the age of 91

He was famous for helping the term ‘Rhythm and Blues’ to replace the then term ‘Race Records’ when he was at Billboard magazine.

His most famous stint was being partner at Atlantic Records with Ahmet Ertegun, who passed away in 2006 where he helped signed Franklin, Zepplin, Eric Clapton and Ray Charles.

He also worked as a producer at Warner Bros Records where he signed The B-52s, Bob Dylan and Dire Straits.

His career also allowed him to work at BMI where he worked in PR and also was in the army before working at Atlantic.

I never like how we hear about these important people until they pass on. The man who signed those legends and changed the way music was described should be a man who’s honoured whenever possible.

He died in his home in Siesta Key, Florida of heart disease.

  1. Mr. C.C. Said,

I totally agree how important people never get a mention till they die. If it wasn’t for him the world would never have known the likes of Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Dire Straits, Led Zepplin, and others. R.I.P. Mr. Wexler! Your service to music is greatly appreciated.
