TBS/TNT snatch Mega WB Movie Pack

Posted by Eoin Mason On February - 28 - 2008

Source: Warner Bros/DC Comics

Do you remember the article I wrote about USA Network buying Indy 4 and the other three Indy movies? Well, USA have been outdone in a major way.

TBS and TNT, two channels of the Turner Network brand, has brought several major Warner Bros movies including The Dark Knight, Get Smart, Speed Racer, I Am Legend, The Bucket List, Fred Claus and a couple of others.

A price hasn’t been released yet, but when the four Indy movies will potentially cost the USA Network $40m, you wouldn’t think that grabbing three summer hits, one big winter smash in I Am Legend, a Christmas hit in Fred Claus, $40m would be a bargain so don’t be surprised if it goes into the reaches of $100m or higher.

My point on this still stands. On TBS and TNT’s Roster, they have one hell of a film line up. They were backed by Turner to grab those movies and they got them to screen on Cable. And that’s the major thing about this deal, These two are cable networks. It would be in the same way as Virgin 1 getting Chuck and The Sarah Conner Cronichles except it isn’t as money spinning. Those two are somewhat successful shows being shown on US Network channels. This deal contains several big to huge potential hits. Having The Dark Knight alone would be a major coupe for any network to have.

Many Americans have Cable, but a very tiny majority don’t have Cable but they’re still filling their roster with such big hits, it doesn’t astonish me as much as show what sort of media battlefield we are running in right now.

‘Wolverine’ goes on a recruitment Drive.

Posted by Eoin Mason On February - 22 - 2008

As Dr Jones, Tony Stark and Speed get ready for the epic movie battle of 2008, so too is the war raging between two big names for the 2009 May Ultimate Showdown between 20th Century Fox’s Worlverine and…Hannah Montana?!

Yes, Disney announced this week that Hannah Montana’s first movie (apart from the highly successful 3D concert) is to be released on the 1st of May 2009. The exact same date as the release of ‘Wolverine: Origins’.

So instead of laying low and letting the Montana Bulldozer run over it, Fox has been on somewhat of a casting drive.

Ryan Reynolds, Artist will.i.am and Lost’s Dominic Monaghan join a rather large cast for Wolvie’s first single big screen epic which is set in East Germany as Wolverine is used as a test subject which resulted of him getting his claws and Anamantium skeleton.

Wolverine has got one thing going for him. Hannah Montana is set to end soon as Disney has a 65 episode policy so it could be possible it could end even this year. And if that happens, the Montana interest will grind to a hault and the film might not make enough to beat Wolverine.

On the other hand….The Suite Life of Zack and Cody just got it’s own spin off, which you can technically call a renewal and rumors have been circulating that the lower characters of the show might get their own show so there might still be life left for the movie to milk off.

Pointless Opinion: Franchises, Mega Franchises and High School Musical

As an avid internet user, one of the websites I love to go on is Jim Hill Media. Jim, you could say, is someone who can find out the dirt inside one of the biggest corperations in the world today - Disney. What they’re hoping to bring out, the back story behind some of their creations and various other bits and bobs. For me, being someone who likes that sort of thing, it’s a sort of mini paradice.

It also explains why I don’t have a girlfriend. Read the rest of this entry »

Universal sign movie deal with Hasbro

Posted by Eoin Mason On February - 20 - 2008

According to Variety, Universal Pictures has signed a six year deal with board game and figurine mega power, Hasbro.

This comes off Paramount’s success with Transformers, a big time Hasbro franchise, and the soon to be in production G.I. Joe.

This deal is with the intention to make four films out of Hasbro’s wide range of brands.

Looking at that list, the movie potential is endless. So we here at Pointless Radio want to give Universal Pictures a helping hand at pitching new Hasbro based movies.

Battleship‘: The Battleship Potemkin meets Pearl Harbour - An Epic Sea Battle between two great powerful nations is lead by two tiny armies of ship.

Tagline: The fate of the wide world is determined on a select few.

Monopoly‘: Wall Street with ridiculous amounts of money- In a world full of many corperate figures and buildings, one man makes it his ambition to rule over them all. But he has many rich rivals to pit himself against.

Tagline: There Can Be Only One (wait….)

CandyLand‘: The Wizard of Oz meets Charlie and the Choclate Factory - A young girl’s dream comes true as she enters a world full of candy. But all is not as it seems…

Tagline: Come to the place where dreams and treats go hand and hand.

‘Stetch Armstrong’: Inspector Gadget meets Fantastic Four - A scientist gets into a lab accident and fused with elastic and uses his newly aquired stretchy powers for good and to stop a devious villian who wants to take over the world.

Tagline: Reach Higher

Hope you guys up in Universal are looking because I expect payment if you use any of these ideas.

‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’: First Picture/Article

Posted by Eoin Mason On February - 17 - 2008

Source: USAToday.com

Hollywood’s in Teaser Picture mode this week. As the strike ends, articles are flying around for new movies and new pictures are being released.

One film that has caught many a person’s attention recently is Hugh Jackman’s first solo outting as fabled X-Men Icon Wolverine. Now with the added stipulation of being in a very competitive May 2009. The week after it’s release on the 1st comes the newly scheduled J.J.Abrams fronted Star Trek on the 9th and after that is the sequal to the Dan Brown mega hit ‘The Da Vinci Code’ with ‘Angels and Demons’ on the 12th.

From this article from USA Today, Hugh is keeping tight lipped on the actual plot but guarenteed there would be plenty of cameos and the return of Wolverine’s nemesis in Sabertooth from the first film.

The X-Men franchises has much to prove after the dissapointment of X-Men 3 and this is a good oppertunity to do that. Rumors are circuling of a Magneto based film with Ian McKellen reprising his role as the ‘Master of Magnatism’ but at the moment, we’ll have to see how this one does before more mutants get their origins shown on the big screen.

Post Strike News Mega Bonanza…thing!

Posted by Eoin Mason On February - 16 - 2008

I missed posting the big strike news here, but I won’t miss giving you guys the aftermath so I will be doing one heck of a mega post on every post strike thing that happened this week.

First, I’ll give you guys a present. For people who don’t know what the writers got from the strike, here is the official document given to all the writers on the Saturday of the annoucement.

What you guys want to know about, outside the deal, is what is the status of your favourite shows? I’ll remove the shows only seen in the US at this moment in time.

On NBC:
My Name Is Earl- returns April 3
30 Rock- returns April 10
ER- returns April 10

Smallville- 2 new episodes in March (pre-strike), returns April 17, 5 new episodes
Reaper- returns April 22, 4 new episodes
Supernatural- 2 new episodes in March (pre-strike), returns April 24, 4 new episodes

ABC and FOX:
Outside Lost (Continuing it’s run with new episodes soon) and 24 (episodes to be shown January 2009), nothing has been announced. Though speculation is rife that Desperate Housewives could be back by March with Ugly Betty coming back in mid April.

One of the major cancellations has been of NBC’s Michelle Ryan fronted Bionic Woman which started with a big rating of 13.9 million viewers. It’s due to premiere on ITV2 sometime in the Spring.

All of this can be seen right here.

The Upfront situation, which is where TV companies hype up the new shows that’ll be shown in the new season, all the major networks have declared they will host the events despite the strike making it difficult to actually produce and make pilots.

And along with THAT (yes there is more) NBC is putting USA Network show ”Monk’ on Primetime and CBS is screening Showtime product ‘Dexter’ which is on FX in the UK.

But this may not be the end. Not if negociations with the Screen Actors Guild goes badly and, because of the backing they gave the writers even saying they’d strike if negociations go astray, that doesn’t look that likely.

Jeez….I need some sleep. If you want any more reaction, go here. Now, if you excuse me, I’m going on strike against writing stupidly long posts.

*CBS renewed the most shows with 14.

Do you need me to say any more?

Alright….I’m excited.

Pointless Opinion: Indiana Jones and USA Network’s Goldmine.

Hollywood seems to be bouncing back after the strikes in a big way. CBS is continuing with it’s plans to show off it’s new pilots for the new season despite NBC not doing the same. Along with that, the Oscars are set to go ahead without a hitch, but what I want to discuss is a topic that’s become one of the biggest news of the Post Strike era.
