News at Ten to Return to ITV!

Posted by Eoin Mason On October - 23 - 2007

In news that made me go all nostalgic (What? It did!) The Guardian is reporting that ITV is set to bring back News at Ten with Sir Trever McDonald at the helm to push itself into the slot BBC have made clear after it’s change on their 10 O’clock news spot.

The reason for the change from 10 to 11 in 2005 was supposed to be for the channel to put on movies in the weekends and to help in case sporting events went on for longer than intended, but a drop of 14% (one million) in viewing figures has forced the hand of ITV to bring back the news slot.

To put it simply, I’m very happy. I doubt I’ll ever watch it, but News At 10 is as British as anything else in this country. An institution, if you will. And if it helps ITV get its ratings up (and stops it from lying to everyone), all the better.

Big Ben tops poll for Iconic London Locations

Posted by Eoin Mason On October - 22 - 2007

A scene in Donald Sharp’s 1978 classic The Thirty Nine Steps has helped put Big Ben on the top of a list highlighting the most iconic London film locations.

The scene in question is when Robert Powell hangs off the hand of Big Ben and is considered one of the most thrilling in film history.

The list also contains several of Richard Curtis films including Notting Hill and Love, Actually.

Kathryn Jacob, spokeswoman for Pearl and Dean, who set up the survey said: “For a truly iconic image of London in film it’s hard to beat the nail-biting, clock-ticking drama seen at the top of Big Ben in The Thirty Nine Steps.”

I haven’t seen the film, personally, but I am tempted to check it out. Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament are what many people think of when they come to London and the fact this survey has recognised this is great for the city. Big Ben is like our Empire State Building or our Great Wall or Leaning Tower of Piza. All of them are big majestic buildings and great icons of the modern world.

There was a time when Sony was King. The first Playstation crushed the N64 and the Dreamcast and the Playstation 2 continues to sell despite it being last generation. Then, it all sort of started to fall apart for them. Read the rest of this entry »
